Roberto Clemente (1934-1972) was a Puerto Rican baseball player, activist and humanitarian who played with the Pittsburgh Pirates, with a career total of 3,000 hits, 240 homeruns, and a .317 batting average, in addition to having earned 12 Golden Glove awards as a fielder.
He died in December 1972 when his plane, carrying humanitarian aid for the victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua, was lost over the sea shortly after takeoff.
